Great Start Readiness Program

Need Free PreK for Your 4-Year-Old?
The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is Michigan’s free PreK program for eligible four-year-olds. Nationally recognized as the top PreK program in the U.S., GSRP offers a safe, enriching learning environment where children develop math, reading, and social thinking skills through fun, hands-on experiences. 


2025–2026 Expansion: PreK For All — Free PreK for Every Michigan 4-Year-Old!

Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, all Michigan families seeking PreK have access to free high-quality preschool through GSRP, regardless of income.

  • Families are prioritized based on need, including those with incomes up to 400% of the federal poverty level (approximately $128,000 for a family of four). 
  • GSRP stands as a cornerstone of the PreK For All initiative, alongside Head Start and Young 5s, aiming to provide equitable access to early learning statewide.

  • Full- and part-day options based on local district capacity.

Who Is Eligible?

  • Children who turn 4 by September 1, or by December 1 if space allows. 
  • While eligibility is broad, enrollment is prioritized for families with greater need—based on income, risk factors, or developmental considerations.
